Kindergarten Teachers: Planting the Roots of Modernism
is a reader curated and designed by myself. Although there exists discussion of Froebelian kindergartens’ influence on the beginnings of modern art, and discussions of Froebelian kindergartens as one of the first careers outside of the home for women in the West, there is limited scholarship that brings them together.
This reader creates a new narrative between texts on both topics. The traditional parallels on Froebel and modernism are printed on a paperback stock, in a conventional modernist style. The articles concerning women using the same style to take up more space and are printed in white printer paper, as if a loud voice inserted in the conventions of history.
